Most people who walk into my clinic are shocked to learn their health insurance already covers acupuncture. They’ve been living with pain, stress, or a chronic condition — sometimes for years — and had no idea that relief was available to them at little to no cost through their existing plan.
As the only dually licensed Chiropractor and Acupuncturist in Ventura County, I work with HMO insurance plans every day. What I see most often isn’t a lack of coverage — it’s a lack of awareness. This post is here to change that.
Which Insurance Plans Cover Acupuncture
Many HMO plans now include acupuncture as a covered benefit. The most common ones I work with here in Ventura County include Kaiser Permanente, Blue Shield HMO, Blue Cross HMO, and Lucent Health.
The organization that administers acupuncture benefits for most of these plans is American Specialty Health, also known as ASH. They oversee the acupuncture network and coordinate coverage for the insurance carriers.
Most HMO members receive up to 20 acupuncture visits per year, with copays that typically run between $5 and $10 per visit. For most people, that’s less than the cost of lunch — and it covers professional acupuncture treatment from a licensed provider.
What Conditions Can Acupuncture Treat
Acupuncture is far more versatile than most people realize. It is not limited to back pain, though it is exceptional for that. In my practice, I use acupuncture to treat a wide range of conditions.
On the pain and musculoskeletal side, acupuncture is highly effective for:
- Neck pain
- Headaches and migraines
- Upper, mid, and lower back pain
- Sciatica — low back pain that radiates down the legs
- Herniated disc conditions
Acupuncture also addresses internal and systemic conditions including digestive issues, asthma and breathing difficulties, gallbladder conditions, liver support, and diabetes management.
Acupuncture often surprises people most in the area of mental and emotional health. It is especially powerful for anxiety, depression, anger, irritability, and insomnia caused by stress. When stress is the root of why someone can’t sleep or function at their best, acupuncture addresses that root—not just the surface symptom.
A Real Patient Story: Sciatica Treated Through Kaiser
One of my patients came in suffering from sciatica — that relentless pain that starts in the lower back and shoots down the legs, making it difficult to sit, stand, sleep, or function normally. They weren’t sure what options they had and assumed treatment would be expensive or out of reach.
After checking their coverage, we confirmed their Kaiser HMO plan included acupuncture benefits. They could begin care right away, with insurance covering most of the cost. Over the course of treatment, their pain significantly improved.
This is the outcome people miss every day when they don’t know their benefits exist. The care was available to them all along. They just needed someone to show them the door was already open.
Does Acupuncture Actually Work? What I Tell Skeptical Patients
I welcome skepticism. In fact, I prefer it. Patients who come in doubtful and leave feeling better are the most powerful proof there is.
Acupuncture has been practiced for over 4,000 years. It is not alternative medicine — it is some of the oldest medicine on the planet. And here is what I tell every patient who comes in unsure about it: you do not have to believe acupuncture works for it to work.
Think about gravity. You don’t have to believe in it for things to fall when you drop them. The ocean waves keep turning whether or not you believe they will. Acupuncture works on the same principle—it works with the body’s laws, not against them.
Acupuncture doesn’t aim to introduce something foreign. It restores what is already supposed to be there: proper energy flow and circulation. When that flow is blocked, pain and dysfunction follow. Acupuncture needles open those pathways so the body can do what it was designed to do — heal itself.
I have had patients come in fully convinced it would not work for them. They leave as believers, not because I persuaded them, but because their body responded.
The Unique Advantage of Seeing a Chiropuncturist
I am the only Chiropuncturist in Ventura County — dually licensed to practice both chiropractic care and acupuncture. That means my patients can receive both services in a single appointment, from the same provider, under the same HMO insurance plan.
No need to schedule two separate appointments across town. No two different providers giving conflicting advice. No gap between the structural care and the energetic care. Everything happens in one place, with one doctor who understands the full picture of what your body needs.
For patients dealing with conditions that benefit from both chiropractic correction and acupuncture—which, in my clinical experience, is most of them—this is a significant advantage that is simply not available anywhere else in the county.
How to Access Acupuncture Through Your HMO Insurance
If you have an HMO plan and want to start using your acupuncture benefits, here is exactly what to do.
First, check whether your plan covers acupuncture. If you have Kaiser, Blue Shield HMO, Blue Cross HMO, or a similar plan, it’s likely already included.
Second, get a referral from your primary care doctor. Most HMO plans require a referral for acupuncture services. This is simpler than it sounds. Call your doctor’s office, describe what you are experiencing, and ask for a referral for acupuncture for pain or for your specific condition. That is the key—make sure you ask for it in the context of a condition or pain you are dealing with.
Chiropractic care typically does not require a referral under HMO plans. You can often begin chiropractic treatment right away while your acupuncture referral is being processed.
Third, find an in-network provider. American Specialty Health most likely administers your acupuncture benefits. You can search for in-network providers through your insurance portal or by calling the member services number on the back of your insurance card.
Finally, use your benefits. Most HMO plans give you up to 20 visits per year. That is 20 opportunities to address pain, stress, or a chronic condition at minimal out-of-pocket cost. Most patients do not come close to using all of them.
Try Acupuncture Before Pain Medication or Injections
This may be the most important thing in this entire post: acupuncture should be your first option, not your last resort.
Too many patients come to me after months of pain medication, cortisone injections, or other invasive procedures that provided only temporary relief — or came with side effects they weren’t prepared for. Acupuncture is natural, non-invasive, and works with your body’s own healing mechanisms. It has no pharmaceutical side effects. It doesn’t mask pain—it works to resolve what is causing it.
If you are dealing with pain, stress, a chronic condition, or anything on the list above, and you have an HMO insurance plan, there is a good chance the door to acupuncture care is already open for you. It may cost you less than a cup of coffee.
