How Often Should You Get a Facial? An Oxnard Esthetician Explains

If you have ever walked out of a facial with glowing skin and wondered when you should come back, you are not alone. It is one of the most common questions I hear. After 25 years as an esthetician, trained under Dermalogica, my answer is simple, but it comes with a little nuance.

I’m Molly of Skincare by Molly in Oxnard, and I specialize in acne and anti-aging skin. Here is how I help my clients decide how often to come in.

How Often Should You Get a Facial?

For most people, I recommend a facial once a month.

Your skin is constantly renewing itself, and a monthly visit lets us keep up with that cycle. We clear out buildup before it turns into clogged pores, keep your skin hydrated, and adjust your treatment as your skin changes.

That said, I always tell my clients the honest truth: it depends on your needs and your budget. Monthly is ideal, but if that isn’t realistic for you right now, come in when you can. Every facial still benefits your skin, and we will meet your skin where it is.

How Often Should You Get a Facial for Acne?

If you are dealing with acne, I recommend coming in monthly. Consistency is what makes the difference.

During an acne facial, a big part of our time goes to deep cleansing and extractions, removing the blackheads and whiteheads that are trapping oil and bacteria in your pores. When clients come in regularly, their skin gets clearer and they see fewer blackheads and whiteheads over time.

A Real Client Story

One of my clients is a 16-year-old who came to me for his very first facial. His skin was so congested that I spent about 45 minutes on extractions alone.

I recommended he come in monthly, and he did. Each visit, his extraction time got shorter and shorter. After a year of consistent monthly facials, I was spending 15 to 20 minutes at most on extractions.

That is what consistency does. His skin didn’t change overnight, but each facial built on the last one.

If your acne is severe, painful, or leaving scars, I also recommend checking in with a dermatologist. Facials and medical care can work together, and I’m always happy to be part of that team.

How Often Should You Get an Anti-Aging Facial?

For anti-aging, I also recommend monthly facials. As we get older, our skin renews itself more slowly, so regular professional care helps keep your complexion smooth, bright, and hydrated.

Just like with acne, the benefits of anti-aging facials build over time. One facial feels wonderful, but a consistent routine is what helps your skin look its best long term.

What to Do Between Facials

What you do at home matters just as much as what we do in the treatment room. Here is what I tell every client:

  • Use the right products for your skin. Acne-prone skin and aging skin need different care. I’ll recommend professional products that match your specific concerns so your at-home routine supports your facials.
  • Wear sunscreen every single day. Here in Oxnard, we get plenty of coastal sun, even on overcast days. Daily sunscreen is one of the best things you can do for both acne marks and signs of aging.
  • Don’t overdo it. More products and more scrubbing don’t mean better skin. Over-exfoliating or layering too many products can irritate your skin and undo your progress. Keep your routine simple and consistent.
