Esthetician vs. Dermatologist: Which Should You See? An Oxnard Esthetician Explains
When something is going on with your skin, it’s not always clear who to call. Should you book a facial with an esthetician, or make an appointment with a dermatologist? The answer depends on what your skin needs, and sometimes the best answer is both.
I’m Molly of Skincare by Molly in Oxnard. I’ve been an esthetician for 25 years, trained under Dermalogica, and I specialize in acne and anti-aging skin. Here is how I explain the difference to my clients.
What Is the Difference Between an Esthetician and a Dermatologist?
As an esthetician, I specialize in the health, beautification, and maintenance of your skin. My work is about keeping your skin clean, clear, balanced, and glowing through professional facials, extractions, and the right at-home care.
A dermatologist is a medical doctor. Dermatologists diagnose and correct skin problems, and they can prescribe medications to treat them.
Think of it this way: a dermatologist corrects the problem, and an esthetician helps you maintain and care for your skin.
When Should You See an Esthetician?
An esthetician is a great fit if you want to improve and maintain the look and health of your skin. I regularly help clients with:
- Blackheads and whiteheads
- Mild breakouts and congested pores
- Dull or dehydrated skin
- Early signs of aging
- Ongoing skin maintenance and a healthy at-home routine
When Should You See a Dermatologist?
Some skin concerns need medical care. If your acne is severe or very active, or if you have open cysts, I will always refer you to a dermatologist. Those conditions need a doctor’s diagnosis and often prescription treatment.
You should also see a dermatologist if your skin is red, painful, or reacting in a way that doesn’t go away on its own.
Can You See Both an Esthetician and a Dermatologist?
Yes, and many of my clients do. Dermatologists and estheticians work well together.
Once a dermatologist has your skin under control, I can help you maintain your results with regular facials and a gentle, consistent routine. It’s a team approach to your skin.
A Real Client Story
I once had a client whose acne was too active for me to treat in the treatment room, so I referred her to a dermatologist. Under her dermatologist’s care, she started using prescribed products, and she came back to see me a month or two later. The difference was tremendous. From there, we were able to work together on keeping her skin healthy and clear.
Tell Me If You're Using Accutane or Retinoids
If you are taking Accutane, or using a retinoid or retinol, please let me know before any service. These can make your skin more fragile and sensitive, especially for waxing.
- Accutane: Wait six months after your last dose before any waxing service.
- Retinol: Stop using it five to seven days before waxing.
- Retinol with sensitive skin: Wait 14 days to give your skin extra time to recover.
Why Every Facial Starts With a Consultation
A consultation is always a must before I give anyone a facial. It lets me look closely at your skin, learn about your history, medications, and products, and decide on the right treatment for you.
It also helps me recognize when a concern is better handled by a dermatologist. If I see something that needs medical care, I’ll tell you and point you in the right direction.
