What Can a Licensed Esthetician Do in California?
California has clear rules for estheticians. Our work focuses on caring for the surface of the skin, meaning the health, beautification, and maintenance of your skin.

- Facials
- Extractions
- Microdermabrasion
- Waxing
- Brow and lash tinting
What Can't an Esthetician Do in California?
Anything that goes beneath the surface of the skin is considered medical treatment in California. That means licensed estheticians cannot perform:
- Laser treatments, including laser hair removal
- Microneedling
- Botox and dermal fillers
These treatments must be performed by licensed medical professionals.
What If You Want Botox, Laser, or Microneedling?
Clients do ask me for these treatments. When they do, I refer them to a dermatologist. A dermatologist can evaluate your skin and safely provide medical treatments that are outside an esthetician’s scope.
Once you’ve had those treatments, I’m happy to help you care for and maintain your skin with regular facials.
