Dermaplaning vs. Microdermabrasion vs. Chemical Peel: Which Is Right for You?
If you’ve been researching ways to get smoother, brighter skin, you’ve probably come across three popular treatments: dermaplaning, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels. They all exfoliate the skin, but they work in very different ways.
I’m Molly of Skincare by Molly in Oxnard. I’ve been an esthetician for 25 years, trained under Dermalogica, and I specialize in acne and anti-aging skin. Here is how these treatments compare, and why microdermabrasion is the one I offer my clients.
What Is the Difference Between Dermaplaning, Microdermabrasion, and Chemical Peels?
Dermaplaning
Dermaplaning uses a small blade to gently scrape away dead skin cells and fine facial hair, often called peach fuzz. It leaves the skin feeling smooth right away.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels use acids applied to the skin to dissolve dead skin cells and encourage new ones to come through. Depending on the strength of the peel, your skin may flake or peel for several days afterward.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a mechanical exfoliation treatment. It uses a specialized device to gently buff away the outer layer of dead skin cells while lifting away debris, revealing fresher, smoother skin underneath.
Why I Recommend Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is my go-to treatment because it’s safe and there are no chemicals involved. It exfoliates the skin physically, so there’s no acid sitting on your skin and no guessing how your skin will react to a chemical solution.
What Can Microdermabrasion Help With?
Microdermabrasion is a versatile treatment. I use it to help clients with:
- Fine lines
- Scarring, including acne marks
- Large pores
- Clogged pores
- Dull, tired-looking skin
Is There Downtime After Microdermabrasion?
This is one of the biggest reasons my clients love it. There’s no redness and minimal downtime, so you can get back to your day right after your treatment.
How Many Microdermabrasion Treatments Do You Need?
You’ll see the best results with a series of four treatments, spaced about four weeks apart. Each monthly session builds on the last, gradually refining your skin’s texture and tone.
Who Should Not Get Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion isn’t right for everyone. I don’t recommend it if you:
- Have active acne
- Have sensitive skin
- Are taking Accutane
- Are using retinol
If you’re not sure whether microdermabrasion is a good fit, that’s exactly what your consultation is for. I’ll look at your skin, go over your history and products, and recommend the right treatment for you.
