What Is a Chiropuncturist?
A Chiropuncturist is a doctor licensed in both chiropractic and acupuncture. The name itself is a blend of “chiropractic” and “acupuncture” — reflecting a practitioner who has gone through the full licensing process for both disciplines, not just one with a passing familiarity with the other.
Dr. Danny Lai became a licensed chiropractor first. After seven years in practice, he went back to school to become licensed in acupuncture as well. That second license changed what he could treat: chiropractic on its own addresses structural problems — misalignments, locked joints, restricted motion — while acupuncture opened the door to a much wider range of conditions, including digestive problems, hormonal imbalances, and emotional imbalance.
Dr. Lai has practiced this combined model in Ventura County for over 30 years and is the only dually-licensed Chiropuncturist of his kind in the area.
How This Plays Out With a Real Patient
Here’s a common example from the clinic: a patient comes in with lower back pain. Dr. Lai treats the structural cause using chiropractic adjustment. But if that same patient is also dealing with insomnia rooted in emotional imbalance, chiropractic isn’t the right tool for that — acupuncture is. Because Dr. Lai is licensed in both, he can address the physical pain and the sleep issue in the same visit, with the same practitioner, without sending the patient somewhere else for half of their treatment.
How Dr. Lai Chooses Between the Two
- Back and neck pain — chiropractic first, to physically free locked joints and restore motion and nerve flow
- Digestive issues, anxiety, and insomnia — acupuncture, working on the body's underlying regulation rather than a joint or a nerve
- Conditions with both a structural and a functional component — both disciplines, combined in one plan
